Races are categorised not only by distance, but by the maximum number of dogs allowed in each team. The most usual categories are three-dog, six-dog, and 12 dogs or more (called open or unlimited); some races have four-dog, eight-dog and/or ten-dog classes instead of three and six.

I'm from Alaska so I know what I'm talking about. In the Iditarod, everyone starts with 16 dogs. I've seen dog teams which include over 20 dogs, though. Also I've seen people rercreationally mush 1 or 2 dogs. Although personally on an extended expedition, I prefer about 8 dogs. Enough for a lot of power but not too much for the hassle of handling a large amount.
