There are a couple in the Boone, NC area. I'm not 100% sure that this is the closest, but it probably is since there isn't much skiing south of the Appalachians. The closest *good* ski resort (by Southern standards) is probably going to be Snowshoe, WV. It's a bit of a hike, but it's worth the drive if you want decent snow (or as good as it can get around the Mason/Dixon line). Note that if you ski in NC, you will ski on snow, ice, and dirt. Enjoy!

There's a ski area in Tennessee. Its called Ober Gatlinberg.

Go to Snoeshoe, WV
I would say it is the biggest and the best for that area.
