(I was wondering why we were getting so much back!) Im scared, I dont know what to do. Is it going to send an immediate red flag to us!? aaarg. I cant beleive this is happening. Somebody PLEASE help!

Im new to this so I havent figured out how to reply yet.

I was talking to a co-worker about this and she said that she did it one year (not sure if it was intentionally) she said she didnt get audited. I am going to file an ammendment (sp?) "thanks for those responses, I didnt know you could do that". because im not stupid enough to leave it alone (I have been freaking out!) but out of curiousity, what are the chances of being audited?

Since it isn't April 15 yet, your taxes aren't even due yet. So even if you both get refunds, you still have time to pay the proper amount after you file an amended return. There shouldn't be any problem.

Did you both efile? The second one should have rejected. But if they both went through, it's hard to tell why.

Don't panic, people don't get in trouble for honest mistakes that they correct quickly. Be sure to file your amended return before April 17, and send in a check for what you owe.

Chances of being audited are very low. But for something like omitted income or double-claiming of dependents, it's not called an audit, you just get a letter telling you what's wrong, and the IRS calculates what THEY think you owe back, and tells you to either pay it or prove you don't owe it. This can happen in a few weeks, or can take over a year, but it WILL happen. These types of mistakes are things that their computers can and will catch. But since you will have filed your amended return by then, it'll be taken care of so the computers won't flag you.

Unless you both e-filed at about the same moment, one of the returns will be rejected by the IRS. If you filed paper returns you'll both hear from the IRS and your refunds will be delayed.

One of you should quickly file an amended return on Form 1040X and change the exemption for the child. Turbo Tax can do that for you.

Unless you file an amended return very quickly, you are both guaranteed to be audited.

you're able to get a bigger return in case you employ your female buddy as an exemption, then you particularly declare your daughter. you won't be able to the two declare her. you may flow to swifter Tax and flow with the aid of each and all the stairs on the unfastened version until now you document to work out a thank you to maximise the return.

The person who claimed the child last will get theirs back. No big thing. You have lots of time.

Amend one of the returns.

1040X is the form you need.
