psht. it's based more upon spirituality than religion. it's also based upon theology, philosophy and myth. they believe in karma, that your actions in this life determine how you will live life in the next, brahman is the greater self or god, the atman is the soul, and they typically have 3 gods; brahma, vishnu, and shiva, but it depends on the sect. the ultimate goal is to achive motshka, or the realization of one's union with god. many hindus practice yoga as form of meditation.

True Hinduism is not 'Hinduism', instead it should be 'Vedantism'
Because the followers are suposed to follow the 'Vedas'. And if you read the Vedas, you find in it, that contrary to what most Hindus practice, the Vedas is DEAD against Idol worship.
It comes in Saam Ved,
' Ikkum Iva ditti yam' Which means Almighty GOD is ONE without a second.
'Na kassiya kasij jani tana chandipa' which means, Almighty GOD is not born and HE begets not.
It comes in 'Chandogaya Upanishad' (another sacred book)
'Andhaatma pavishantu ya sambhuti vipaste'
Which means they are in darkness who worship materialistic things.
No where in the Vedas it says that cows are Holy. The problem with most of the Hindus is that they have never red the Vedas.
And its like an explosion if you read it. Because the Vedas call for worshipping ONE GOD, the vedas shun Idol worship, allow eating cow, and even have prophecies of the coming of Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him).
He is called as 'Kalki Avatar', in the vedas.
So if you see, Actual 'Vedantism' is Monotheism just like Islam and just like 'Actual Chrsitianity' which also calls for Belief in ONE GOD.

What today is called Hinduism is the result of centuries of evolution by numerous divergent spiritual movements within India. So varied and different are the various expressions of Hinduism that virtually the only factor they have in common is that they all originated in India, hence the name Hinduism which means 'the belief of Indians'.
The main religion was Brahmanism, the worship of the gods mentioned in the Vedas through sacrifices and rituals.

oh my goodness! the Hindu religion is so rich in complexities, so resplendent with 1000s of deities and 100s of varied sects there's no way you can pin it down to one set of base conceptualizations. Hinduism is the oldest recorded religion, it's Vedic, it's laws, theories and myths dating back a thousand years before that of the Hebrews.

Both Hindus and Buddhists believe in karma and reincarnation.
The main difference between the two is that Hinduism supports the idea that we have an immortal soul.
