Science is always evolving because there is no "certainty" in that either. That's why a "proven" fact can be changed later on in the future because it gets proven or improved with or by something else. So the truth you once KNEW becomes a false statement or at the most an incomplete one.

Explain how you know to "love" to be "sad" to be "upset" to "long" to "imagine" etc etc.. if these can't be seen either!? But you KNOW they are there right?! You KNOW! So is God!

Okay now, "Gravity" or anything HAVE NOT been proven by science for SURE. WHY? because no matter what they come up with they can never tie everything together to work together. So NONE of the indivual formulas WORK together. They may work indivually but NOT as team. Therefore there IS a GOD!
Even Einstein came to believe that there is SUPERIOR POWER after his many experiments and scientific theories!!

Try some early God Science way before Man flat earth.
Many of the principles of modern science were recorded as facts of nature in the Bible long before scientist confirmed them experimentally. A sampling of these would include:
* Roundness of the earth (Isaiah 40:22)
* Almost infinite extent of the sidereal universe (Isaiah 55:9)
* Law of conservation of mass and energy (II Peter 3:7)
* Hydrologic cycle (Ecclesiastes 1:7)
* Vast number of stars (Jeremiah 33:22)
* Law of increasing entropy (Psalm 102:25-27)
* Paramount importance of blood in life processes (Leviticus 17:11)
* Atmospheric circulation (Ecclesiastes 1:6)
* Gravitational field (Job 26:7)
* and many others.

CHRISTIAN! Why do you spend so much time bickering when you could be doing God's work: taking care of the "least of these my children." Do you think that by engaging in distracting argument that your God will not know you by your works? Do you think that by bickering and not performing that you can fake God out and justify your wallowing in the seven deadly sins and still go to heaven?
Science expands knowledge, even knowledge about religion. Christians believe that the fact that there are gaps in scientific knowledge proves that something is wrong. What Christians cannot see is that the gaps that exist today will be closed and the Christian insistence that the Earth is the center of the universe will be proven inaccurate. We know the world is not flat. We know this NOT because the Bible says so but by a close examination of the physical evidence. Scientists are curious (like Satan) and humble (unlike Christians); they know they do not know everything but they share knowledge freely among the scientific community, offering the most parsimonious explanation for the information currently available. Currently available. They know that they cannot cling to their theories to tightly because all scientists know that another theory must supersede theirs in the light of new knowledge and all active scientists want one thing: to understand, predict and control the natural world. Scientists seek new knowledge for new questions that arise from what is currently known.
The epistemology upon which Christianity is based is faith, tradition, authoritarian doctrine and a book written by men with their own agenda in their own time. It is obsolete, primitive, and ineffective. If the Bible kept pace with science we would have world peace and prosperity. People don't really believe the Bible and certainly don't act upon it. How many preachers hold real jobs and preach for free? Didn't the Bible admonish this.
Science does not presume to tell us what is right or wrong except on the basis of our survival and the survival of the planet, which they presume is good. Maybe not. Perhaps we should let Christians destroy the planet with religious war with other psychotic religions and leave the planet to the cockroaches.
The real battle between religion and science is because the Christians can't mind their own business, that of helping the "least of God's children". That would mean they would have to give up living in gated communities and become as the sparrow, not worrying about whether they would have food or clothing tomorrow.
Finally, science studies love and sadness and has developed treatment strategies that are demonstrably effective. Something religion has never done.

Sigh.
You've had a poor education, it would seem. No, nothing is ever 100.00% certain - but you still seem pretty certain that the technology called the internet, that you're using to communicate this question, will work the way you expect it to. My guess is that you also regularly go to the doctor to recieve prescription medication, drive or use public transportation, watch TV, and all the other things Americans do - all of which are products of scientific research. Based on laws of physics, chemistry, biology, etc., that have been demonstrated to be reliable statements on the way the world works. Evolutionary theory works the same way - it's been shown to be a reliable explanation of the world based on numerous bits of evidence. Much more evidence than any religion has ever offered for the existence of a higher being.
Oh, and another thing - in your ignorance you seem to have missed the fact that Pope John Paul II issued a statement saying that evolution should not be considered contradictory to belief in God. Atheists are not the only ones who have a rational basis for support of evolution and science alike - most people in this country do, except for reactionary people like you.
Take a philosophy of science course; heck, take a theology course, for crying out loud. You are in severe need of enlightenment.

Yet another Christian who doesn't even know what a theory is. From the American Heritage dictionary:
Theory: A set of statements or principles devised to explain a group of facts or phenomena, especially one that has been repeatedly tested or is widely accepted and can be used to make predictions about natural phenomena.
A theory, contrary to what your favorite creationist website says, is not just an educated guess or a vague conjecture. And yes, theories DO change because there are always new phenomena being discovered, and therefore our understanding of the world changes. That is what science is all about. What, would you prefer to remain stupid, believing the world is flat and the sky is big, solid dome over your head? That's what people believed for millennia, until new evidence showed otherwise. Would you suggest that science is evil, because it forced humanity to accept a sun-centered system and abandon the Earth-centered paradigm? Science leads to increased intelligence; religion is enforced stupidity. Religion would have you believe that knowledge is evil, asking questions is bad, and change is unwelcome. Religious people resist every new discovery and invention, from airplanes to stem cell research, because their mind set leaves no room for anything but faith in the nonexistent.

If you knew the meaning of the words "scientific Theory" you would undestand that theory in this sense means that it has been tested over and over and has yet to be proven false. You know what else is a theory... GRAVITY, yeah you believe in that don't you of course you do because evry time you drop something it falls. Science is always trying to find the truth unlike religion which says hey its this way and thats it. How many times has the church changed its stance on things? A whole lot, not because they found out something new, because science found out the truth and then religion said oh wait that is right maybe we should go with that but throw something in there to make it look like we came up wth it. Your little rant was cute but wrong.

Your premises are so flawed, & there have been so many INTELLIGENT answers, I shouldn't even bother. You twist "theory" to fit your subjectivity, carved in stone, not even here to truly get insights, but to make declarations so illogical--pardon me while I laugh--that most people see as transparent.
If blind faith feels "comforting," go for it. I knew at once by your question: "ATHEISTS!" that it would be nonsense. Oh, come on. Science is constantly evolving, & does not claim to be "absolute" which is more than can be said about "faith" in an archaic, re-written, contradictory book. Okay. The earth is flat. The planet is 4,000 years old. Oh yes, science is constantly evolving because it's clear there's no "certainty" in anything. At least we can comprehend that, & "grow." Stay in your little box. (As if you really could, benefiting from science even at this moment!) We try to enlighten you--you tell us to pray. Well. Says it all. Oh yes, Atheists know there is no "absolute" truth--& thus make no false statements. For a Christian, you're as humble as a rabid rat. Most of the bashing, (I've done research) comes from your side. I can only speculate why you are so afraid of us.

Honestly I agree with what another person has said. Arguing to other people about religion vs. science, or even the inevitable religion vs. a differing religion is quite useless. As well as coming onto a question/answer site and arguing something that you aren't willing to accept anyone else's answer to. Personally, I loathe Christianity for very good reasons, but they are my opinions, which evidently differ from your own. So therefore why ask that when you might as well argue that Jesus was a one-eyed fish, because other's are going to disagree with you either way?
Or, perhaps, you're just looking for a good agruement. Well then sure, religion vs. science is a good start...but it's one that shall never end nor is anything new. Be original next time.

Science is the art of uncertainty and the celebration of knowledge. Of course we don't know the absolute answers - what would be the fun in that? We get to come up with answers that best answer the questions given the evidence that we have at the time. Those are theories. They CAN be disproved or superceded by a better answer as more knowledge is attained.
Theism, on the other hand, is making up absolute answers that have no basis in fact or empirical observations. You make them up because they are comfortable, because they take away your fear of the unknown, because they give you a sense of power. You think you have the only answer, you think you have the right to judge others on your terms. That's really just moral and intellectual cowardice.

Theory:
In scientific usage, a theory does not mean an unsubstantiated guess or hunch, as it can in everyday speech. A theory is a logically self-consistent model or framework for describing the behavior of a related set of natural or social phenomena. It originates from and/or is supported by experimental evidence (see scientific method). In this sense, a theory is a systematic and formalized expression of all previous observations that is predictive, logical and testable.
Silence:
1.absence of any sound or noise; stillness.
2.the state or fact of being silent; muteness.
3.absence or omission of mention, comment, or expressed concern: the conspicuous silence of our newspapers on local graft.
4.the state of being forgotten; oblivion: in the news again after years of silence.

I am in agreement with Triple when he says that religion does the same thing. We realize some of the principles are unjust or do not make sense with the knowledge that we now have so we adjust religion based on the times.
Sorry to bust your bubble but GOD nor any religion for that matter is proven, it is based solely on faith and the rantings of humans who existed over 2000 years ago. Humans I might add who had very little knowledge of thier surroundings and who were easily influenced, never challenged what they were taught and nothing more, not real grounds to prove anything now is it.
Science is not perfect and no one said it ever was but at the very least it is based on highly intelligent beings with vast knowledge of thier surroundings and who challenge even thier own answers.

Look up 'theory' in a dictionary. Seriously, right now, look it up and tell us all how silly your question is.
In fact, I'll save you the trouble. Among the several definitions given in any decent dictionary for the word 'theory' you will find a scientific definition along the lines of "A set of statements or principles devised to explain a group of facts or phenomena, especially one that has been repeatedly tested or is widely accepted and can be used to make predictions about natural phenomena." When people talk about scientific 'theories' they are using this definition. It's really very different from the colloquial usage of the word theory for a guess or conjecture.
And yes, science does change with new evidence. What's your point? If you believe something that refuses to change when new evidence proves it wrong, then your belief cannot possibly be based on anything other than blind faith.
And it gets worse. The bible, which I assume is what you think we should all believe instead of science, is itself based on science. Of course the science it's based on is now thousands of years out of date, and virtually all of it has been proven wrong. So are you seriously saying that it makes more sense to take one look at some ancient 'theories', then shut your eyes, stick your fingers in your ears, and just pretend that we haven't found any more information since then?
