Yes they consider them dead loved ones:

These holy animals are called kabbas, and many people travel great distances to pay their respects.

The legend goes that Karni Mata, a mystic matriarch from the 14th century, was an incarnation of Durga, the goddess of power and victory. At some point during her life, the child of one of her clansmen died. She attempted to bring the child back to life, only to be told by Yama, the god of death, that he had already been reincarnated.

There was a Discovery Channel show about India, and I guess rat worship really exists in some areas of India (although not all over). I think the rat has some association with Ganesha, the elephant-headed god, but I forget what it is. They showed people leaving pans of milk on the temple floor, and hundreds of rats drinking it. I guess it's no sillier than people worshipping an invisible god in the sky. At least you can SEE the rats; you can't see the god in the sky.

Its because of their culture. Respect others cultures and stop believing that yours is the right one. If you really want to know, do a yahoo search on worship of rats in the middle east. In fact, go a step further and travel, if you can, to other countries to learn their cultures. You will learn, what seems abnormal to you, is very normal to other cultures. When you learn that there are many diversities in life, thats when you grow as a human being in general.
