Guerrilla warfare is a unconventional military tactic of engaging the enemy only to the least amount of confrontation and withdrawing using mobile and surprise tactics and usually is practiced over a long period of time. Usually used when one force is out numbered and gunned or just unable to engage the enemy without losing.
Guerrilla tactics usually work the best against larger forces that are less mobile. The use of local terrain and people are important in guerrilla warfare, and in some cases, the use of terror.
Usually, most guerrilla fighters do not fight under a distinct emblem nor uniform. This means under the laws of war, they are not labeled as lawful combatants. Meaning that they do not apply to lawful treatment of combatants. Under Article 37.1.c, "the feigning of civilian, non-combatant status" is not acceptable and is prohibited by the Geneva Conventions.
Use of guerrilla warfare is not limited to non-combatants as there are special units in military that are trained to practice guerrilla warfare but they do not dress as civilians and they do operated under a flag. These specific military units are usually assigned to breach deep into enemy lines and engage in sabotage, espionage, and fight enemies by guerrilla tactics.
All in all, in general, and for easier understanding, you may call it a "hit and run" military tactic.

It is how a group defeats a superior force. In the Civil War the US hid, struck quickly and then vanished into the population.

Nam was much different because many of the bad guys looked like the good guys and used the terrain to their advantage booby traps that disabled and did not necessarily kill. A favorite was "bungy sticks"; a hole filled with pointed sticks, add a little human waste in the hole and cover with leaves. The unfortunate guy that stepped in the hole got a RAGING infection and it took two people to care for him. Three plus people were taken out of action.

The US started to play the GAME and it made a difference, not enough, but a difference. Certain units would sneak into a LARGE VC camp, eliminate the leader, take 5-6 others and then place numbers next to the rest..say 1-120. Then they would vanish into the night. The VC would awaken in the morning and it was chaos psycologically. When it settled, snipers would take out numbers 1-5 plus the last number. It is amazing how little one can function when they are AFRAID to go to sleep for days on end. That is Guerrilla Warefare!

Now we have the current WAR and it is a whole different thing because innocent people are being killed to cause fear and a psycological advantage; everyone is afraid to go to the market for fear that some bomb will go off.

The GENEVA Convention defines Rules of Engagement and the US lead forces seem to be the only group following them with a few BAD EXAMPLES.

TOO many civilians are being killed or maimed by their own people due to past support or RELIGION! Remember the funeral with a TON of combatants that the US could have hit and PASSED?

There are just unwritten limits to Guerrilla Warfare and the US forces ssem to be the only ones following them.

I hope that this helps.

Warfare refers to a style if you will of fighting from the time before guns generals would advance troops in groups that would end up engaging each other and going toe to toe. This is how we got the phrase enemy lines. Guerrilla warfare is the style of combat used by a force to small or ill equipped to go toe to toe with superior forces. Hit and run tactics to slowly weaken enemy troops with minimal casualties from counter measures because they disappear after the attacks like guerrillas.

Guerrilla Warfare is the militant forces, aka freedom fighters of the country that is defending war they believe in, with no standard of what weapons used to get a point across. IEDs, RPGs, bombings, etc are all with the category of guerrilla warfare. if you think about it when we started to fight for our rights as citizens of the united colonies, to become the united states we use guerrilla warfare for example the Boston tea party, and other actions brought upon our independence.

Ambushes, hit and run tactics. This is pretty much an incredibly cheap way to win a war, though it doesn't always work, but it works well enough.

Think surprise attacks, ambush etc...sudden attacks quick retreat and repeat process, which in turn usually causes fear, confusion and all that stuff in the opposing force
