It's an automatic one-year suspension, even if the accident wasn't your fault. This is also dependent on whether you have priors on your record, a valid D.L, if you injured someone or damaged property, and if they accused you of a D.U.I. If none of those apply it will be a one year suspension-and you usually get a hearing with DMV to dispute the action(but why bother if you didn't have insurance?) They want their money from you for "breaking the law" so there will be fees and such also. Tough break, I'm sorry. I hope you weren't hurt. Good luck.

If you get insurance after the accident or after being given a ticket for no insurance, you would still have been driving without insurance at the time of the accident or ticket. That makes you guilty of the offense. You are still liable for not having the insurance.
For the accident, the insurance company will not cover any damages. They will see that, for example, the accident was at 1 pm, but that you didn't obtain coverage until 4 pm, and refuse to pay.
If it's just a ticket for no insurance and there was no accident, it is possible, but not guaranteed, that the judge MIGHT reduce or dismiss the ticket if you can prove that you obtained insurance that same day.

Those involved in an accident are required to make a report to the DMV. If that accident report shows that any driver did not have insurance, then that driver's license is suspended for one year, and cannot be reinstated until the driver has insurance (or other proof of financial responsibility). There can be a hearing, but, as noted, unless you can show that you did have insurance your license will be suspended. Cal. Vehicle Code section 16070.

somebody i be conscious of has been employing with a suspended license on and stale for like 5 years. keeps getting site visitors tickets yet through fact he drives everywhere in the state for artwork, he keeps lacking his site visitors courtroom dates, hence suspended license that finally ends up in extensive fines, and so on. besides. He has been pulled over like 30x on a suspended license and law enforcement officials never took him to reformatory. He even went to the police station to pay a parking value ticket and the law enforcement officials pulled up his record and informed him "look there's a $2500 warrant out to your arrest. i might incredibly not arrest you authentic now so merely pass right down to the courtroom first element in the morning and get a courtroom date to deal with your site visitors tickets, will you?" So all you paranoid types, in case you reside in a huge city like la or manhattan or Miami, law enforcement officials incredibly do not care lots a pair of suspended license and in case you get put in reformatory over it, its in all threat cuz you have been additionally below the impact of alcohol or pulling some loopy reckless employing stunt or you had drugs on you. as far as injuries pass, if somebody has a suspended license it means they are not lined by any coverage (even their spouses coverage). Worst case situation is a sizable lawsuit if somebody if badly harm. in any different case your damages will in all threat be lined by your "uninsured driving force" coverage and if a cop takes a police record, the guy at fault with the suspended license gets a value ticket in the mail and could pay yet yet another high-quality for having a suspended license.
