Some states reduce time served if the inmate completes certain education programs. For example, the sentence might be reduced 6 months for completing a GED, 1 year for a HS diploma, 1 year for an Associate's degree, or 2 years for a Bachelor's degree.
He needs to talk to someone at the prison to see if those options are available to him.

He can snitch on someone in the jail and they will lower his time if the 'information' results in a conviction for someone else for a more serious crime.
Other than that, I doubt that anyone on here would be able to help you (or him) unless they know what he did.
I dont know why you state that he got more time than he deserved. Alot of times, the judge uses other factors in determing a sentence.
If your cousin had previous charges for violent offenses, they might have considered that in the sentence that he got.
If he really feels like he got the shaft, he really should have his mother get some money together and have an attorney look over his case and see if there are any issues that could be grounds to appeal his current sentence.
In the meantime, please continue to send your cousin letters and let him know that you love him. I am very sure he will appreciate your love and concern.

If he got 45 years then he did the nasty for sure. If he gets less I don't think it will be because he was given too much in the beginning, I think it will be time off for good behavior. Getting an expensive lawyer at this point, well I don't think that's going to help. The sentence he was given was handed down by a judge and was intended to "fit the crime".

If he got 45 yrs he obviously did something pretty serious. How much time one is sentenced to depends not only on the crime but any priors.

It depends on what he's in there for. I get it...this is like a Sean Connery movie right? Your cousin is guilty, he plays innocent, gets realeased and seeks revenge. HA HA HA. I'm joking...But seriously...how bad is it?

He's lucky he wasn't executed. He didn't get 45 years for eating too many cherries.
