A billion people have standards outside the morally retarded and antiquated views of the bible or Koran. And that is not to mention the law which is based primarily on common British law.
What planet doesn't know this? life and honor establish the rights of the people as well as decent through legal means .it's horrible to think that if Christians get there way we would have cruel and unusual punishment as they condemn others to eternal fire and
brimstone which is far more cruel than the most heinous of criminals . Liberals do support the law and it's modernization.
Bash Hitler and the cruelty of the Christians or Jews as well:eternal torture is even ungodly if there was such an atrocious being.

You appear to be one of the misguided folks who don't think liberals can be Christians.
The moral standard for liberal like those of Conservatives depends on how they were brought up.
I often wonder myself what The Christian Right uses as their moral compass, because from what I have seen, it sure doesn't appear to be their bible.

Darlene Bishop
Ted Haggard
Kent Hovind
Jimmy Swaggart
Jim Whittington
Benny Hinn
Peter Popoff
Oral Roberts
Robert Tilton
Just to name a few "Upstanding Conservative Christians"
"What is the standard of how they judge something right or wrong.
Any ideas?"

You know I think it would be a better question if you asked us liberals to answer your question, rather than asking others, like we dont have the ability to answer. I trust it is ok with you for me to answer the question.
Yes, I am a liberal. I am even an (gasp) atheist! Do I have morals, of course. My moral compass is my conscience. I try to live my life so I do not harm others. I try to think about how my actions effect others. I try to make the world a better place for everyone. I am a very responsible person. I hate war, violence, hatred and do all I can to make these things of the past. I do these things because the world will be better because of it, not because I am afraid of hell.

That's a good question. We might ask the same thing of all the heathens and barbarians from the beginning of time. We should ask the Eskimo and Pygmy, the Communist and the Buddhist.
Your question seems to suggest that without the Bible, a work of fiction perpetrated upon primitive man by greedy, power hungry, lustful men, we would have no morals at all. Nonsense.
I bet you are the guy that thinks the Republican agenda of self-interest over communal interest is consistent with the Bible's admonition to take care of "the least of these my children".
I have an idea that you can interpret the Bible to justify raping children, extorting money from those least able to loose it and start wars to steal a nations resources so we can be gluttons. We will reap what we sow and we know you by your works. Of course your interpretation says, works don't count, only mutter a few words on your death bed and you get 72 virgins or some such nonsense.

Here's my moral compass:
It's wrong to force my views on others.
It's wrong to steal from people.
It's wrong to commit murder. Killing in self-defense is something else.
It's wrong to condemn others for their beliefs, or lack of them. Clean up your own yard first.
It's wrong to betray those you love, which of course means the one you're married to.
Respect isn't automatic. Respect is earned. Demanding to be respected just because you're older, elected or appointed to your position in the world is a form of disrespect for others. It's an imposition.
If those things sound a lot like the Commandments, you're right. The Ten Commandments were ripped off from the Code of Hammurabi, which predates the Commandments by about 300 years. Hammurabi knew you don't need gods to do the right thing. I know it, too.
And just for the record: Some of the most heinous and immoral people in history claimed to be religious.

If you use the Bible as a moral standard, you are not a very moral person, that is some pretty twisted stuff :O
Morality should come from the social ties, values, and traditions we develop throughout our lifetime, not from the fear of punishment or hope of reward.

Hmmm... There are many many branches of Christianity that are liberal. I bet there are lots of liberals in more moderate Churches.
Have you not read about all the wierd stuff conservatives have been doing lately? I don't think they don't a leg to stand on when it comes to having better morals/ethics.
