The short answer is that "Lucifer" became the "devil" through a mistranslation or misreading of the text in Isaiah 14:12

1. There is no such thing as the devil.

2. The only mention of the Satan in the so called "Old Testament" is as force acting under the control of G-d - not as an independent spiritual being. That Bible never identifies the serpent in the Garden of Eden as the Satan. The original Hebrew translation is regarding a serpent. Check out the texts.

3. Lucifer is a mistranslation or misadaptation of "morning star" into some connection with the Satan, where in Isaiah 14:12 it is really in reference to the fall of the king of Babylon. That is the entire context of the narrative in Isaiah 14. Check it out. See http://www.wrestedscriptures.com/b07satan/isaiah14v12-14.html

In "Isaiah 14:12, it [morning star or lucifer] referred to one of the popular honorific titles of a Babylonian king; however, later interpretations of the text, and the influence of embellishments in works such as Dante's The Divine Comedy and Milton's Paradise Lost, led to the common idea in Christian mythology and folklore that Lucifer was a poetic appellation of Satan."
