The Greek word "aphesis" is the most common. It means "sending off", in other words, "canceling, doing away with". It is a bit more straightforward than "forgive" which is more emotional.
The word-root SLH shows up in the Hebrew bible twice as well as "forgiveness" in English; this word basically means "repair, make better", so involves a sense of reparation.

Derived from old french. I think humanity has always used forgiveness. Though; WEBSTER estimates the word was in use before the 12th century...which i think is only referencing the human interpretation of moral pardon, because "The Lord's Prayer" actually uses "forgive" (atleast the translation, we all understand a lot has been lost in translation)
A faithful translation will depend on what denomination one is: the Roman Catholic believes forgiveness can only come from God and most important via mediation
