Your files should not be erased. But I suggest you DO back them in a usb drive or another partition of the hard drive.
As for the programs, some program MAY need to be re-installed to initialize with the Vista. And unfortunately, some of the older programs MAY nto be compatible with vista.

you may set up Vista and "twin boot" with XP. although, in case you come back to a determination to enhance XP - do no longer purchase an improve disk and set up it over XP. continuously decide for the full version. the reason being is that any corruption you have at the instant have on your OS will greater beneficial than possibly carry over into your new OS. improvements are in no way recommended. continuously format and reinstall from scratch. An Upgrade will surely move your files n programs to vista
You dont know what comes next. So do a backup before you upgrade.
