My suggestion is wait for about six months till most bugs are cleared out and then decide. In the meantime, take a look at this URL to learn more.
Good luck

It is far too early to be buying the latest gimmick, just wait till after Christmas 2007 and the prices will plunge.
Or even better, wait until after they have released Windows Vista service pack 1......
They WANT you to buy a new computer, this is the whole purpose of the exercise, didn't you realise? It's not worth the hassle trying to squeeze it onto an "old " computer.

Your files should not be erased. But I suggest you DO back them in a usb drive or another partition of the hard drive.
As for the programs, some program MAY need to be re-installed to initialize with the Vista. And unfortunately, some of the older programs MAY nto be compatible with vista.

I use it in the beta versions. And is more glassy requires more memory and has the same windows feeling. Yes, it will keep your programs no need to reisntall. of course it has new features, but nothing Whoo out of the ordinary. Try using Linux. like suse 10.1 or .2

Yes it is very good better than XP. You may need a new hard drive if the old one is corrupted, and a new video card and processor if they suddenly break. But it shouldn't cost more than $1000 to replace.
