Well, I had this issue recently myself. I had my hair dyed black some time ago. A few months ago, I wanted to dye it red--bright red--but it didn't take well on the black at all. so yea, you gotta bleach first.

You do not need to bleach your hair if your hair is natural black.... if you bleach it and put the red over then it will fade after a week or two of washing to a yucky orange colour. (red colour tends to fade heaps).
My hair is naturally a light brown colour and I dyed it jet black and then decided to put red streaks throught it. My hair dresses wouldnt bleach it so she put the red straight over the black and let it sit for about 40 minutes to an hour before she rinsed it off.
The first time i got it done it wasnt bright bright red, but the second time i went back to get it done (after like a month) it turned out great.
Just remember, hair colour dye should go on pretty easy if its natural non-coloured hair........
Good Luck!

Bleaching is the only way you'll get the results you want. I've tried the red on dark hair before and its never come out right. Otherwise, the black hair wont take the color correctly and you'll end up with oranish hair.

well first you have to bleach your hair then put in the dye because your hair is dark and the dye wont show up on it unless u bleach it first- its very difficult to do but if you go to a hair salon they can do it for you or if you have a friend that has done it before its good. but trust me- you dont want red hair- i have it and i hateee it.

if there is absolutely no color in your hair now then you can use a bright red and a higher volume of peroxide...but they would not be as vibrant as bleaching and coloring the strands red. leave it to a pro, to do hilights they need to be foiled in and then of course colored the red after. You could ruin your beautiful black virgin hair if you do this yourself, it really is an easy process-for a pro. It shouldn't really cost that much either if you were just to get like a partial hilight. leave it to them to save yourself money and a headache in the long run! : )

My mother has pitch black hair and she used something called "Sun In" and it turned her hair red...it was years ago, I don't even know if they make Sun In anymore...you spray it on your hair after you shampoo and either sit in the sun or blow dry your hair and the heat slowly bleaches your hair gradually over time...

omg, sont listen to these people.
dying your hair dries it out, and bleaching it dries it out even more. DONT do both.
theres like a special product out there made specifically for black or dark hair, and all the colors come out EXTREEMELY well, without bleaching it. i think its called... color...something. color silk i think

For it to really show, you would have to strip ( bleach ) your hair, then dye it.
