communication,honesty, and trust. they work hand in hand. if you don't talk things out then things build up and emotions stay bottled up, and trust grows weak. but if you talk about things that are bugging you then you are trusting them with infortmation and you're relationship builds. but if you're not honest with the person, everything will fail. people know when you're lying.

I think it depends on what you want. I think, though, to be in a good relationship, you have to start by being a true friend.

Well that depends on what kind of relationship your talkin about... being true friends is a relationship. and anyway, you can't have a bf/gf relationship w/o being true friends as well.
