Yes its compatible, I have it installed and it works great. A little different from other versions with new ways to show you the tools but you'll get used to it. Looks cool! :P use your student discount at school to get it at a lower price.

Yes, I've been part of the Microsoft Office 2007 Beta team. It works flawlessly.

I'm not sure your level of involment in such a thing but keep in mind, if you are a corporate user, it will not work with Exchange Server 5.5.

In general, new Microsoft software will be backward compatible with XP for sure and maybe older

Start weaning yourself from Microsoft. Try OpenOffice, for example. A big selling point is the price: $0.00

Yes, Microsoft Office can also be gotten free (legitimately!)
if you have the right connections (for example, if you're a
student at a university that has the right license agreement
with MS).
