The possession of any firearm in the City of New York without a New York City license is strictly prohibited. But individuals transporting standard rifles and shotguns through the City may do so for a period of 24 hours after entering the City if the weapons are unloaded and either locked in a case or stowed in the trunk of car...
NO HANDGUNS ALLOWED

Walking through the streets of NYC with a rifle or shotgun openly displayed would cause public alarm and at the very least would get you arrested for Disorderly Conduct. If the rifle or shotgun is not registered you will also be arrested for Posession of a Deadly Weapon and unregistered firearm. NYC laws allow you to purchase and own a rifle/shotgun but you must first apply for a Rifle and Shotgun permit. You can go to your local Sporting goods store and purchase as many as you like. You will have a waiting period before you can walk out of the store with it (in the box). The fee for the Permit is a couple of hundred $$$ and it is renewable every few years plus there is a fee for registration of each weapon. Oddly enough you can go a few miles out of the city limits and purchase a rifle or shotgun without all that hassle (except for the waiting period). You still must show proof of residency in the state...If you live within the NYC limits and store the weapon at your residence you must apply for the permit and register the weapon. All of this of course applies if you want to do things legally.
