When you ask him to spell something out loud he can, but when it's in a book or a flash card he cannot read it. We work with him everyday on spelling words, as he has a test each week, and reading. We have bought him the Leapfrog laptop, doesnt like- the learning movies- likes but still having problems, and computer programs- doesnt really care for.

He goes every other week to his mother's house, and the problem is he forgets everything that he learns while he is at home because his mom does not help him. She would rather set him down in front of the video games and let him play. For his spelling words, she hands him the list and has him memorize them. In my opinion he is not learning anything by this. She really does not care and we have no clue what to do next. Is there something else that we can do? Should we consider a tutor at this point?

Any input would be appreciated.

Contact your son's school and see if they have an early literacy program. This program is offered in Ontario, Canada and is very good at helping students who have weak reading skill improve their ability. The school may be able offer you strategies to use at home to help your son.Reading is as much about confidence as it is about ability.Let him read whatever he wants, just as long as he is reading.

Get the ALPHABET flash cards.

My son is 6 and loved this idea.

If the word is cat, lay out the cards with the K,C,E,A,T,H.
Have him put the cards in the order.
Make him create the word. He obviously can spell (as you said).
But, putting the letters in front of him, as a visual, will help so much.

Be patient, and good luck.
