is it preferable to start with an empty (formatted) hardrive prior to installing Vista, or should I simply upgrade from XP professional?

Is your XP functioning flawlessly? If yes, go right ahead and use upgrade option.

However, I am a part of Microsoft's Vista Rapid Deployment (RD) team and have been playing with Vista for about 13 months now and I personally prefer doing a fresh install.

There are two main reasons for using FRESH install:

1. This will avoid all unnecessary security holes from the previous version
2. Some program may not work after upgrading the windows

Good Luck and feel free to email me if you need further explanation or help installing the OS.

I would say buy the windows vista from the store with the cd. Yes you are paying more money. However, you have a solid cd without the chance of your key being pirated later. Also, I have vista ultimate on my machine, and it's inner workings are way different than xp (basically the difference between windows and dos). So A complete fresh install is best in my opinion. I have been a vista beta tester for a year now and know this from exp. Hope this helps.
