Unfortunately, flea baths (and collars) are generally ineffective. Baths only get rid of the fleas that are on the animal at the time (if that), and collars only effectively control one area of the body.
The best thing to do is get a monthly preventative, such as Frontline or Revolution (which are also good for ticks and other parasites). It is very easy to apply, just once every 4-6 weeks, and can save you and your pup lots of trouble. Dog fleas (and cat, they are the same parasite) carry tapeworms and in rare cases, can cause severe anemia (though usually only in young aninimals). It does sound like your dog has fleas, so I would get your vet to prescribe you a good flea preventative-and watch out for Hartz, they are a terrible company.
Good luck.

fleas won't just sit there and let you look at them. it's flea dirt, or in more understandable terms, flea poop. give him a bath in any shampoo. doesn't have to be flea shampoo. there are insecticides in flea shampoos that can be dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. just give him a bath and then go to the vet or even a groom shop, or petsmart or petco and get some Frontline or Revolution. You apply it between the shoulderblades. then leave it alone and don't bathe him for at least 3 days. the drug gets into the glands in the skin so that if a flea bites him the flea will die. this helps get rid of them. meanwhile clean your house and all bedding etc and spray for fleas if you must. it's a vicious cycle good luck

To see if it is fleas put it between your fingernails and squeeze. It will pop if it's a flea and crunch if it's flea poop ( which is just blood that it's sucked up from your dog ) If they are fleas take it to the vet for meds. or try some over the counter flea bath. Hope this helps you out. good luck

It may be flea dirt. The easiest way to tell is to put a little of the black stuff on a paper towel and lightly moisten it. If it is flea dirt, you will see it kind of turn red. It is because flea dirt is just the digested blood from the flea.

it could be flea poop, especially if located in the rump. Is you dog itching other places too? If you comb him with a fine comb you will get fleas if they are in there. You may need to go to the vet for some advantage flea meds.

It's probably flea eggs, I give my dog an oatmeal bath and that usually takes care of it

sounds like it could be fleas, the black stuff you refer to is known as 'flea dirt'......I think it is the flea's poo. Bath your dog in flea shampoo and wash any area where he/she sleeps.
