My hair is very thick and I've been growing it long. It's now about halfway down my back. My problem is that the outer layers of my hair are very healthy and shiny, but the layer underneath, closest to my neck is very thin and has started to break. I've noticed split ends and dullness. I asked my hair stylist if she could trim these areas, but she said it would look uneven to trim them and not the rest of my hair. I've tried hot wax treatments, heat-styling protection, and special conditioners. I feel like I'm just wasting money. Does anyone have any other ideas? Sorry this was such a long question.

I couldn't really find a good picture. In this picture http://www.victoriastrands.com/images/index_r1_c4.jpg you can kind of see the area of the hair I'm talking about - when you flip your hair upside-down, it's the part that ends up on top, that area at the very nape of my neck.

I don't wear my hair up very often.

ask them to razor your hair and thin it out it will help
or ask them to cut it with texturizing scissors because it doesn't chop of length as much as getting rid of split ends and thinning

Use a conditioner on your hair and leave it on for like 5 minutes try putting a hair cap on over your hair with the conditioner mixed into your hair and leave on for 5 minutes to let your body heat work with your hair this will help bring back some of the dullness. The split ends are split, but this will help it look shinier and a little healthier. Good Luck! Do this every other day at least!

Well, ther's a puzzeler for ya!
If I'm getting this right, when you put your hair into a pony tail, the underneath is what is bothering you? Do you wear it up alot?? How often are you having it cut? Sounds to me like you DO need that cut but ti's really hard for me understand. Is your stylist thinking that you want ALL of your hair cut to that length? Sorry hunny....I just can't seem to get it without a picture. If you could post one, that would be great. See if you can get someone to take a pic of what your talking about. Sounds to me like cutting it underneath shouldn't be a problom if I'm gettin' you.
Sorry I wasen't much help!

You can't expect your hair to grown if you have split ends. When I was in middle school my hair was really long but I had split ends really bad--when my stylist chopped it all off my hair grew big time.....I don't think that it would look right if you cut underneath just cut it especially if it has grown this far it wouldn't be a problem for it to grow back.
