They riped after they are picked.

Keep them in a brown paper bag on the counter if they aren't ripe enought when you get them.

They should yield to gentle pressure.

avocados will not ripen on the tree.. they only ripen when picked. If you buy some that aren't quite ripe, put them in a paper bag (not plastic) and set them on your counter for a couple days. They'll ripen right up!

They are always rock hard at the super markets & they ripen up
but my opinion
they probably will taste better if ripened on the tree but maybe put some netting on it to stop possoms etc eating them ( if its for home use you can't eat them all so leave some for the animals if you are kind & cover only some
but also some insect pest may get them so it may be best to pick before ripe dont use poison!!

I agree with most of what everyone said, you need to pick them before they ripen, however if you want to ripen them faster once picked; put them in a paper bag with an apple. It has something to do with the acidic properties of the apple that makes it ripen faster..and this is the same with all fruits. Put them in a paper bag with an apple to ripen quicker.

Avocados will not ripen while they are still attached to the tree, apparently because of an inhibitor in the fruit stem
