When you attempt to learn skiing, learn as the begginners do and stay on the simple runs. Trying to keep up with more advanced or over-challenging your self can easily lead to getting hurt or to an experiance that may turn you off from the sport.
If the conditions are cold and miserable and your experience is not so good, dont be intimidated. Try again until the conditions are just right! It's fairly simple to learn as gravity plays a big part, just be patient watch others or don't be afraid to take a group lesson. Once you get hooked-It's a blast!

If you haven't done either, definitely start out skiing, then when you get comfortable and pretty good, move up to snowboarding. They are to very different sports, and you have to be very patient and be ready to fall on your butt for both. I prefer snowboarding and have been doing it for 5 years. It took me one full season to get the hang of it. You can pick up skiing faster though. Be warned, once you start snowboarding, you'll never go back to skiing. It's the best snow sport and plus, you don't have to worry about doing the splits as you do with skiing =]

This is one sport where you kind of have to learn to get to the bottom of the hill! Ride the lift up to the top, and point yourself downhill. You can't not learn!
Oh and take someone who knows how to either ski or snowboard, whichever you decide, so they can give you tips and pointers. My daughter was a good skiier, but had never snowboarded. Her patient friend took her down the hill, and after 2 trips down she got the hang of it.
have fun, be safe, and never eat yellow snow!

I ski so I have no idea about snowboarding, but it is not that hard to learn because you just go as slow or as fast as you need to. Try not to get stuck on the wrong hill though.

What you need is patience and good balance. I have neither. That's why I spent 90% of the time on my back the only time I tried skiing.
