Change a minimal amount of cash ($150-200) at a bank, do everything else with a debit card (or credit card) , you get a better exchange rate with the card, and can use cash for small expenditures.

If you are talking US dollars to Canadian, the easiest and most economical way to handle things is to withdraw money from a Canadian ATM. You'll get the best exchange rate and your bank will charge you a lot less than the currency exchange places. Just make sure you double check the symbols on the ATM with those on the back of your card. (Some ATMs in airports are very limitted in which cards they will accept.)

I travel to Canada a lot. I will either go to my local bank here in the US to do the exchange before I leave or, if I'm too busy to do that, I will just use my atm card there and withdraw cash as I need it.

Banks give you the best rate. Avoid Bureau du Change kiosks like they are the Plague ... unless you want to pay 10% on each Traveller's Cheque you cash.

Go to your bank! They always give the best exchange rate. If you change your money at the Airport, expect to pay more.

Don't change your money! Just use your ATM card and withdraw the cash you need just like you would in the states.
