Our yard is mostly dead grass with few tufts of green here and there. It is about 10 x 20 feet off a patio. It is our dogs' potty place. But lately it has begun to stink to high heaven. We clean up the droppings daily but the urine smell is horrible. We watered it (we live in the desert and don't get much rain) but that seemed to make it worse. Any suggestions.

I had the same problem. I found out that lime or lye didn't work, but something l called Odo-Ban, It is all natural, you dilute it and spray it with a gardensprayer. It smells like wildflowers.
I had my dogs urine tested and it was fine.
It is probably because the area is so small that you have an odor.
They sell Odo-Ban at Sam's or here http://www.odoban.com/OdoBanRetail/Locator.html

i own a kennel with inside and outside runs, inside concrete floors, outside are your typical ground material with some leaching ability. Hydrated Lyme is the type of Lyme you want to use and add some spice like Cinnamon, nutmeg, a small amount sprinkled goes a long ways. Also I use a product and have for years that works on any material called creolin, it is a liquid form cleaner deodorizer, can be used on the ground to just wash down, used to be used in horse barns chicken yards and the such. Not sure how many people use it now but can be bought at local farm stores etc.

Dog urine smells from the urea content. Also once the bad bacteria starts growing in the area, it really smells bad. I see 2 problems -- first, you have a really small yard. You don't have much plants/grass. The first is harder to solve, which means you need to walk your dog. If you had a larger yard, you could grow plants that are more resistant urine that would utilize the nitrogen (from the urea) as fertilizer.

If getting rid of the odor is your aim, try spreading an alumina-silicate mineral that absorbs urea. "Clear the Air" is one product. http://www.cleartheair.com/shop/lawn-odor-remover.html It is similar to kitty-litter crystals. That might be another way: train your dog to use a litter box.

I suggest you have your dog's urine tested. His PH could be off causing a strong odor. When you find out if his urine is too acid or alcaline, then you can go to a garden center and ask what to use for the problem. Usually spreading some lime helps to dry up and neutralize the urine. At a farm I volunteer at for a horse rescue group, we use it in the stalls to dry up and neutralize urine odors. It works great!

You need to get a really good all natural herbal potion, water it way down and then sprinkle it all around. Here are some tht I use with good success:

I use Sol-u-guard from Melaleuca but any good herbal base will do.

I dilute that stuff and splash it on the perimeter of the house and the lawn - and it really gets rid of pet urine and spray smells.

take your dog to the vet, it's nto normal for a dog to have such strong-smelling urine. And after you get her looked at, get some lime to help with the smell
