ok....

I started with us.gov

education and drilled down to searchable databases

that list is here....
http://library.stmarytx.edu/acadlib/doc/electronic/dbeduc.htm

from there.....

http://nces.ed.gov/programs/digest/
The primary purpose of the Digest of Education Statistics is to provide a compilation of statistical information covering the broad field of American education from prekindergarten through graduate school

This looks to be the best source of finding the answers for the entire country as well as local data.

In fact!! I did find your data here....
http://nces.ed.gov/programs/digest/d05/tables/dt05_096.asp

you will have to add up the numbers from the collums (broken down by state) but you've got it!!

http://nces.ed.gov/surveys/sdds/
has data on schoold districts but unfortunately you have to look up each district by state individually so far as I can see.....

hope this helps
