i went to 12 years of school with a lot of nuns. it's a life lesson, journey and calling. it's not an easy road and one that they feel God has called them to. i asked once (on a dare in 9th grade) do you have to be a virgin to be a nun (i thought i'd be beaten by our older principal) and the nun talking to us about vocations sweetly smiled adn said - no, i was married and my husband died.
nuns live a simple life offering poverty and chastity to the Lord, He becomes t heir spouse. they are very dedicated women.

No, I'm not a nun but there are times when I feel like a null. I hope that is good enough to answer your question.
There are several ways to decide to become a nun. First, you can look at all of the advantages and disadvantages and if the advantages of being a nun out weigh the advantages of not being a nun, you choose to be a nun. Second, you can forego thinking altogether and just do what others say you should do. Third, if you are really repulsive to men, then there isn't much choice but to become a nun, unless you are too ugly to become a nun and that is hardly possible. I think they must accept everyone, except men.

Deciding one's state of life involves a period of discernment in which you come to the Lord in prayer over a period of time, preferably under the direction of a mature spiritual advisor. Believing that the Lord only wants the best for us, and that He knows what life will be the best for us because He made us, we pray for guidance in our decision and wisdom to know where we will best love and serve Him, as a married woman or as a single person, either a nun or singel lay woman. If you feel drawn to the life of a nun, why not inquire at the Missionaries of Charity for a start. They can surely help you find your way.

I think it truly is a calling. My uncle was a priest. He'd even dated a while but he constantly felt drawn to a religious life. He was the greatest guy I ever knew. He was a chaplain in Viet Nam. We've got a picture of him saying Mass on the hood of a jeep right before the troops went into battle. He died of brain cancer from agent orange exposure about 10 years back. While I don't know any nuns enough to know their stories, I imagine it's a similar calling. If you believe in fate, perhaps those particular people were not fated to have a soulmate? Can't imagine that type of life myself but I'm thankful others are called.

I am not a nun. I have been acquainted with nuns--each said that they got a "calling,"
Their love for God is much stronger than their love for any human being.

I think it first requires a very healthy attitude towards sex (no joke) where someone sees sexuality as neutral - not bad or good. If the concept of physical sex is seen as indulging the passions or as 'sinful' or as leading away from God, then this MUST be correct first. There needs to be NO specialness related to sex -- no sense of holyness about giving it up, etc. Once that's done, then one can see what one's motivations are and see if they're in sync with leading the life of a nun. I know too many nuns who were psychologically unstable (and deluded) because they weren't aware of their own weird and unhealthy attitudes towards sex, etc.

Nuns ran the Catholic church school I went to as a kid. They were mean as pit bulls.
Read "The Spiral Staircase" by Karen Armstrong if you're interested in the memoirs of a Catholic nun.
