He can only take one item at a time--on his raft across the river.
If he leaves the chicken witht the grain, the grain will be devoured.
If he leaves the dog with the chicken, the chicken will be devoured.
How does he get everything across.

He wants each one (chicken, dog, and grain) in tact when he's finished with the ordeal. I mean come on people. You can't make bread from a dog or get eggs from a dog...LOL!

he takes the chicken across the river, rows back and grabs the fox.

Then he takes the fox across the river, leaves it on the other side, grabs the chicken and rows back to the original side.

He then grabs the grain and rows it across the river to the fox.

Then he returns empty handed, grabs the chicken and crosses for the last time.

ok he takes the chicken first
then comes back and gets the grain
then he takes the chicken back to the other side of the river leaves the chicken gets the dog takes it to the river and leaves the chicken drops off the dog and then goes back and gets the chicken problem solved

well i guess he lets the chicken eat the grain, then the dog eats the chicken and then he puts the dog into the raft and go across the river or something.

Well if the chicken eats the grain and the dog eats the chicken, and you take the dog across afterwards wouldn't you in fact be taking them all across the river?
