until you've apprenticed and know the difference you dont!!! If you're apprenticing ur mentor will gladly tell u what to look for, once uve experienced different machines u will know what u need!
do u want a shader or a liner? whats the difference? is the contact point supposed to be touching the spring and causing a spark, do u need a capacitor, how many coils should u use!!! Do you need one with a longer or a shorter stroke.
IF YOU DONT KNOW WHAT UR LOOKING AT U WILL GET RIPPED OFF.
Get an apprenticeship like every decent artist and dont put those u know in danger from ur lack of knowledge. That and u will forever be looked down upon in the business for starting as a scratcher.
just an additional note, ebay is every artists garbage can for machines they have messed with and cant fix. unless u know what is wrong simply by listening to it run the chances are u will never fix it and will never udnerstand why u cant get ur machine to work right.

Ebay, tattoo supply shops and theres plenty of ads for maunfacturers in the backs of tattoo magazines! They aren't hard to get a hold of if you know where to look. You may even ask a local tattooist where he/she gets their supplies.
