Well, when you contact your local social services, they will have you fill out a good amount of paper work so that they can get to know who you are. Then, if they think that you will be a good foster parent, you will attend classes so that you are trained, and know all the rules and regulations (you cant hit the kids for any reason, etc). Fostering is a great idea, and all states can use more qualified and caring foster parents.

Look on Yahoo Search for "[your state] social services"

Foster parenting is a job that includes taking care of the social, emotional, and medical needs of a child who is not your own. Typical stay is one year, longer if the parent's rights are terminated. You will always get notice if they are going to be moved. Your first step should be to contact a social service agency that trains foster parents. Be sure your finances are in
order and your home is safe and clean. Good luck to you!

Go to your local Department of Child Services and tell them you are interested. They will tell you who you need to talk to. But basically they will have you fill out an application and then they will check you out to make sure you are qualified. If you are a drug user or ex-user, if you have had any mental problems, or if you have any physical problems, they may deny you. They will talk to neighbors, friends and relatives and they will also look at your home and see what you have to offer a child. I hope you follow through and get approved. There are so many children who need someone to take care of them and love them even if it is only for a short time.

It varies from state to state. But, in NY it goes a little something like this.

You need to fill out an application, with criminal history and be fingerprinted. You need to supply information on this size of your home, your income (must be enough to pay your bills), you also need to have a back-up babysitter to be fingerprinted.

You need to attend classes, and have a home study. You need to be able to have a social worker in your house frequently, and take the kids to appointments.

More importantly you need to be prepared for the fact that they are troubled kids with high emotional needs that you have to be able to fill.

That being said, it is a very rewarding experience.
