Hi everyone, i have a problem it seems there are rats living on my back porch. How they got there or why they are living on my porch is beyond me. the only food out there is in a deep freeze that they can't get into. I dont know how to get rid of them any ideas. i know there are at least two i saw them. im worried becasue i have 8dogs that can get onto to back porch and i dont want them bit, i also have cats who can get in there too. i want to catch the rats before they get to my animals and hurt them. I realize catching them myself is dangerous but im going to do it.

You can get humane traps at just about any hardware or pet store. Once caught, you can drive them out somewhere to set them free. You can also try to trap them with a box or crate until you can get animal control or an exterminator out to pick them up. Good luck, I can't stand rats!! And you're right to worry. You have no clue what those rats could be carrying. Block off any access by your animals if possible to keep them safe.

Edited to say, do NOT put rat poison out. That could also kill any of your pets that get curious and get into it.

Hi there. The rat baits available contain coumadine which is a powerful blood thinner, but dogs have eaten it and died of internal bleeding. You can use regular rat traps out of the way of your animals. There are also humane traps to trap and transport to a new location. The choice is yours. May your rat days end very soon.

l have heard that they have live traps to catch rats but l would think my cat might get in there and the poison might be touched by the pets. l wish l could help you more but that are the only two ways l know of.

It's gross I know, but living on the east coast of florida, after the big year of hurricanes, we had some find their way into our house and we tryed everything, don't use glue traps unless you want to have nightmares for the rest of your life, if you poison them, they will go back into your walls or attic and die and you won't be able to live in your house because of the smell, we tryed the humane traps but they were too smart to go into them, so in the end we had to resort to traditional traps, heartbreaking, but it solved the problem. Better hurry, because they multiply pretty quickly.
