Initially, you will probably lose more than 3 pounds a week, assuming you are 40-50 pounds overweight. This will gradually slow to the point where you will find it difficult to lose more than 2-3 pounds a week as you apporach your ideal weight. So long as you exercise properly (don't over-do it, especially early on) and eat the right amounts of the right foods (fruit and veg etc), losing more than 3 pounds a week initially shouldn't be a problem. There are fad ways to lose weight rapidly, and in my opinion they are always the wrong way to go. The only patients I have that ever lose weight in a meaningful, long lasting way simply eat right and exercise regularly - it's not rocket science. Always consult your family physician before begining a new exercise program, especially if you are 40-50 lbs too heavy.

Effects of Rapid Weight Loss
Losing weight too rapidly can have negative effects on your health and well-being. Losing weight at a rate faster than an average of two pounds per week (after the first three weeks) can lead to:

An increased risk for developing gallstones
Dry skin and/or hair loss
Electrolyte (fluid) imbalances
Women who lose weight at a fast rate are also prone to menstrual irregularities.

In addition, many studies have shown that rapid weight loss is almost always followed by weight regain.

What To Do If You're Losing Too Quickly
If you are losing weight at a rate faster than an average of two pounds per week after the first three weeks on the Weight Watchers plan, we strongly advise you to:

Increase your food intake to help slow your rate of weight loss.

Consult with your physician or health practitioner.
