My sister just returned from a visitation for a Morman friend of hers. The deceased was dressed all in white. She said it reminded her of a baptismal-type gown. I've never been to any type of Mormon service so I couldn't tell her why that was. Now I'm curious too. What is the significance of the way he was dressed?

Do Mormons also wear white during communal services - like the Mormon equivalent of church on Sunday? I apologize if I'm using the wrong day or terminology. I'm genuinely just curious.

White clothing symbolizes cleanliness and purity. LDS people (Mormon's) wear all white in their Holy Temples. When they die they are usually (not always) dressed in their Temple clothes, to symbolize that they are clean and ready to meet Heavenly Father, because no unclean thing can stand in his presence. Mormons are buried in their temple clothing, which is white.
In response to your second question, when Mormons go to church on Sunday, the men wear white shirts and ties, and the women wear dresses. The dresses don't have to be white.

You already have a couple of good answers. Having said that, I would like to say that cremation is also acceptable nowadays due to rising financial costs of funerals. In that case, the deceased may or may not be dressed in white first.

As others stated, if they are temple attending members they are buried in their temple clothes. As far as going to church...as long as you are respectful it doesn't matter what you wear. I use to sit next to a older guy who wore his Harley Davidson vest and leather pants. I don't always wear a tie, but I dress like I would if I was standing before God. You can decide what He would be fine with.
