It depends on what are you burning, but every time, you can explain it by using the combustion reaction, for example:

CH3 + O2 = CO2 + H2O (CH3 is methane)
Then, you can balance the reaction and you get
2CH3 + (7/2)O2 = 2CO2 +3H2O

So, for combustion to take, its always necessary oxygen.. the oxygen reacts and, whit lots of heat, liberates the corresponding reaction products.
