It is not known to be in any way contagious and cannot at this time be 'prevented'. There is some thought that there may be a genetic propensity to develop this disorder in some families. In my own experience the best thing to do is to follow your doctor's advice after diagnosis and to stay as healthy as possible. Eat right and be active if possible.
