This is an issue that needs to be considered in the light of verifiable facts. (Some of the people who answered are mistaken.) Our region is leading the way in learning about the death penalty. Here are some of the facts.

Re: Speeding up the process and the possibility of executing an innocent person Over 120 people on death rows have been released with evidence of their innocence, and many of these had already spent well over a decade on death row. If we speed up the process we are bound to execute an innocent person.

Re: DNA
DNA evidence is available in no more than 10% of all murder cases. It is no guarantee that we will never execute an innocent person. It is human nature to make mistakes.

Re: cost
The death penalty costs far more than life in prison. The extra costs begin even before the trial. New York spent over 200 million dollars to sentence just 7 men to death since 1995. Only 4 of the 7 men had an appeal (just one). The annual cost of imprisoning someone, in New York State, is $35,000 per year. Speaks for itself.

Re: Possibility of executing an innocent person
Over 120 people on death rows have been released with evidence of their innocence. If we speed up the process we are bound to execute an innocent person.

Re: Deterrence
The death penalty is not a deterrent. Murder rates are actually higher in states with the death penalty than in states without it. Moreover, people who kill or commit other serious crimes do not think they will be caught (if they think at all.)

Re: Alternatives
48 states, including New York, and Federal law, have life without parole on the books. Life without parole means what it says and is no picnic. This means being locked into a tiny cell for 23 hours a day, forever. It means what it says.

Re: Who gets the death penalty
The death penalty is not reserved for the “worst of the worst,” but rather for defendants with the worst lawyers. When is the last time a wealthy person was sentenced to death, let alone executed??

Re: Victims families
People should know that the death penalty is very hard on victims’ families. They must relive their ordeal in the courts and the media. Life without parole is sure, swift and rarely appealed. Some victims families who support the death penalty in principal prefer life without parole because of how the death penalty affects families like theirs.

Last of all, opposing the death penalty does not mean a person condones brutal crimes or excuses the people who commit them. The New York State Assembly held hearings on the death penalty during the winter of 2004-2005. The New Jersey State Legislature set up a Death Penalty Study Commission which held hearings in 2006, and issued its final report early in January 2007. Transcripts are available online. I believe that the dialogue on the death penalty should be based on verifiable facts. People should make up their minds using common sense not revenge.

There was an execution recently where the man was on death row for 31 YEARS !!! What's the point of having a death penalty if it's not going to be carried out swiftly? To answer your question, yes, the death penalty should be brought back to New York. But with Clinton and Schumer around GOOD LUCK !!

We do have the death penalty in New York! It's reserved only for cop killers, but the jury actually has to vote for the death penalty.

Honestly I believe if there is absolutely no possible way an innocent person has been convicted then there should be an execution promptly.Keeping them on death row for years only costs us more money that could be put to better use

My personal opinion (and that's what this post is for, right?) is that the death penalty is wrong. I understand that it isn't right for anyone to play God and kill someone, but I also don't believe that it's right for the government to step in and kill that person in turn. I know the saying is "an eye for an eye", but times change and people grow and I just don't think that it should hold true in this situation. If it was my decision, I would want to see these people sit in isolation for the remainder of their years and have that time to think about what they've done and live with the fact that they took another human being's life. I just don't believe that it's right for us to kill someone, regardless of what they've done. Let them deal with it before God when their time comes naturally.

HONESTLY...........i think there are far to many people sitting on death row.people that are sentenced to death should be put to death in no more than 3 years.that is plenty of time for the person to file appeals.so yes, quit wasting MY money on death row inmates and put it to good use.there are millions of starving kids here in the united states that can use the money that we spend to house and take care of death row inmates for 15-30 years.

It costs approximately $90,000 more a year to house an inmate on death row, than in the general prison population or $57.5 million annually.

All killers, why are cops so special. we should carry executions on pay per view, half the money to the State for costs, half the money to the victims.

just a thought.

Hmm, that mean the cops who shoot innocent people should also receive the death penalty. If so, I am all for it.

The death penalty should be completely abolished, worldwide. It is a barbaric practice that has seen it's day.
