Not only that, but this story was obviously written by primitive people who believed that the Sun went around the Earth. That is why they believed it could stop. The Sun does not go around the Earth, of course, and therefore it could not stop. The Earth COULD have stopped rotating, but this would have caused such enormous tidal forces that the entire planet would have blown apart. Besides, this would have meant that the bible was wrong. It didn't say that the Earth stopped rotating. It said that the Sun stopped overhead.
This is just another primitive fable that make it obvious that the stories of the bible, while useful in teaching a lesson or principle, are NOT to be taken as a literal account of anything that actually occurred.
This will make the fundamentalists angry, and they will call me an atheist, but that's just the way it is. The Sun didn't stand still overhead. It just never happened.

Dead Sea Scrolls; other Biblical accounts of same basic thing is found (because in Genesis God tells us He gives us the Sun, Moon and Stars in the sky as signs of the times) as in:2Kings 20, Amos 8, Isa 38, matthew 24, Ezek 32, joel 2, Luke 23;
All are signs, this one in particular to show his love and care of Israel. And, I might remind you that the children of Israel as mentioned throughout the Bible is guess who?? Well, they went North and travelled over the caucus mountains and settled Europe and finally the USA, Canada and others - and are called today "caucasions". Do you want a multiple choice?
This is just one of the many times that the Father has guided and directed our forefathers, finally to this great free Nation and others like us, making us as plentiful as the stars in the sky, and the sands of the sea. Those miracles performed were to establish the relationship between man and his God. You should re-read this Book, and follow up with the others in Scripture.
Even with your obvious questions that you come up with to try to challenge people, these same questions may just give you some insight you never had before. So, keep asking and keep reading.

The answers below show one of the things that drove me crazy when I was a christian. "Somebody told me that Nasa...." "I heard that.." "My pastor said that some scientist said..."
These off the wall statements never have any scientific citations. Believe me, if NASA proved that the sun stood still for a day, we would all know it. There would be information published. Lets think about this. How would the "sun stand still"? Do you think the earth stopped rotating? Do you have any idea what would happen if that occured? Don't believe hearsay!
I do want to add this isnt just something Christians do. All you have to do is go to one of the urban legend web pages. Gullibility isnt just a religious trait.

Because the Gibeonites had arranged to become slaves of Jehovah God and his people, five kings of the south joined together and laid siege to Gibeon. The Gibeonites refused to surrender to these five pagan kings, for they knew that to do so would not spare them from extermination at last by Jehovah’s executioners. They sent to Joshua and called for help. Joshua and his army made a forced march by night all the way from Gilgal. They surprised the besiegers of Gibeon. Then Jehovah himself went into action and threw the besiegers into confusion. As they fled, Joshua’s forces slaughtered some of them. Then, as the battle account reads, “Jehovah hurled great stones from the heavens upon them as far as Azekah, so that they died. There were more who died from the hailstones than those whom the sons of Israel killed with the sword.”
The ordinary day was not long enough for Joshua and his men to pursue and kill all the enemy. So Joshua called upon Jehovah God to perform a miracle and lengthen the daylight. With full faith in the Creator of the sun, moon and stars, Joshua said: “Sun, be motionless over Gibeon, and, moon, over the low plain of Aijalon.” In that remarkable command Joshua was scientifically correct, for the moon as well as the sun was involved in this rare miracle. Joshua 10:12-14 says: “And the sun kept standing still in the middle of the heavens [from Joshua’s standpoint on earth] and did not hasten to set for about a whole day. And no day has proved to be like that one, either before it or after it, in that Jehovah listened to the voice of a man, for Jehovah himself was fighting for Israel.” But at the same time that he was fighting victoriously for the Israelite executioners, Jehovah was also fighting for the life of the Gibeonites who feared him and who chose to become his slaves.—Josh. 9:1 to 10:27.

The Ancient Hebrews were engaged in battle. God wanted His Chosen tribe to continue and win the fight, and to continue they needed extra time or day light to achieve Gods will.
Remember, God invented time on earth, time is relative in Heaven (Does not exist as we understand it here on earth)
Einstein's explanation of relativity tells how time can be altered or appear to stop with constant motion that is faster than time it self.

It never happened, obviously.
The sun doesnt stand still.
The earth doesnt stand still.
If it had, the solar system as we know it would have what........?????????? ........disintegrated?
Spun out of control?
Blown apart?
Ruptured?
Exploded?
The earth revolves around the sun. The sun already sits still, relatively speaking. The earth moves. Not the sun. Ddddddddddddddddahhhhhhhhhh.
So the earth stops moving and it makes it look like the sun stops moving. Ddaaaaahhhhhhhh.
More Christian fanatasy. OK. Fine. But if the earth stopped moving, even for a split second, I dont think the Iraq war would be as serious today as it is. Do you?

How do you recognize that this experience grew to become into no longer recorded someplace else? Judging by using your different questions, you have no longer even examine the bible, no longer to show different vintage histories... what proportion human beings have been on earth at that factor? what proportion copies of historic activities have been preserved? The solar status nonetheless isn't something to us...God raised the lifeless!

There was only one man that had the Faith to ask for it to be so and see it so far. When you ask for such a thing you better be prepared to trust the Lord and believe that what you ask for He will do. You see God's promises are for all not just some. Increase your Faith and you can see great things also.
