I have two cats and just recently got another kitten about two days ago. The first two are still not use to the newcomer and one of them still hisses at her. How long will it take for them to get use to each other and become "friends"?

i got my 2nd cat when my 1st cat was about a year old. it took about a week for her to stop hissing at him, and about 2-3 weeks for them to 'play' together. they do 'play fight' sometimes, and if they get too rough i usually clap my hands loudly or stomp the floor and say NO sternly. they get along great now.

Cats do not like change, and adjust very slowly. I usually recommend that you put New Cat in a separate room for a week with food and litter box. Old Cats get to have the rest of the house. At the end of the week, you swap. Old Cats go in to the separate room for one day while New Cat gets to run the house. At the end of that day you simply open the door and walk away. Let the cats meet on their own terms at their own speed. This gives Old Cats some time to get a clue that someone new has joined the group.

Since you apparently did not do this, you can count on some hard feelings on the part of Old Cats. Don't let it bother you. They will eventually decide they can let the new guy have some of the less desireable places to sleep. It may take weeks or months before they forget that they have hard feelings. They are going to have to work it out and you will not help matters by "encouraging them" to get to know the new guy. Just stay out of it and be sure to give Old Cats the same attention they have always gotten from you.

In the mean time, it is best to have one more litter box than you have cats, since sometimes the Old Cats will guard the litter box and not let the new guy use the group box.

I suggest you start reintroducing them right away!

Put your new kitty in a bathroom (or a "kitty-proofed" laundry room) with her own litter box, food/water dishes, a blanket and some toys. Your present kitties will be able to smell her through the door, still having control of the house but still knowing that your new kitty is there.

After a few days of this (I suggest a week) put your new kitty in a cat carrier and place in a room where your two present kitties hang out the most. Your cats will be able to interact with your new kitty through the door of the cat carrier. If your kitties get hostile (or if the new kitty gets too scared) place her back into her room and try again tomorrow (try doing it twice a day (in the morning and night) when you are home so you can supervise).

After a week of this (or eariler if your cats take to ignoring or otherwise getting use to the new kitty) open up the door of the kitty's room and let her roam out on her own (do not let your present kitties in first). Then let them meet on their own.

They may still not all get along and may still hiss/swat at each other. But it might not be so severe as it was.

When we brought home a new kitty my 14 year old was having no part of it (and let us know it). They've been roommates for two years and still do not get along all the time (they've taken to ignoring each other for the most part now). They may never be "best friends" but simply house-mates.

Good luck with your kitties!

I was talking to a cat behaviorist today and he said it can take up to six months for cats to make the adjustment to a new cat or kitten.

So patience is the key. All cats will not become "friends" so I would give up that expectation. Just relax and let the cats work it out.

probable it will be superb. I have a fourteen 3 hundred and sixty 5 days previous cat and extremely last christmas were given 2 new ferral kittens. Hevan is time-honored with of she would not like the cats (properly she in hardship-free words extremely would not like Yinyang yet Ginger protects her from the bully cat, Yinyang, he's a touch coward) yet it truly is because she's previous you ought to attempt putting the cat someplace in a room and save it there the first few days to a week. rub a towel on the recent cat and enable the different cats scent it, to get used to his or her despatched. do a similar with the former cats to the recent ones. later on open the door extremely (only a crack) and enable them meet. it ought to not flow properly the first time (or 2...or 3...) yet do not supply up it is going to take a lengthy time period. also verify that you do supply your previous cats purely as a lot interest, in the journey that they have a chair they decide on to sit in and the recent cat takes the chair, positioned the cat down off the chair. do not enable the older cats imagine the recent cat is "taking up". do not attempt to get them to devour jointly proper once you enable the cat out of the room. best of success!!

Teh cats may always hiss at each other. they are cats and just have their ways, but they all have claws so noone has an unfair advantage. It may take 2-3 weeks for things to settle down for the most part.
