i just got a bichon frise last weekend but i am 13 so i have school and myy parents have work. During the week days we leave the house at 7:30 and ge back at 3:40. We are trying to crate train her so we leave her in her cage with her food and water and her toys. Problem is when we get back, she has "accidents" in her cage. And she smells bad so we have to wash her everyday. Any suggestions?

we cant leave her outside because she hasnt had all of her vacines and there are frogs outside. Frogs's slime is highly deathly for dogs. I have read several books about bichon frises and they all say it is okay to leave her alone for up to 7 hrs in her cage.

FYI: i didnt come her to be judged and to be told that i am being cruel to my puppy. I have been informed from many sites, books, and puppy and it is okay to leave her. I was just wondering if anyone had tips.

puppies need to be fed about 3-4 times a day, but not while no one is in the house. I wouldnt leave her food or water in her crate. just feed her in the morning, after school and dinner it will help regulate her poop/pee schedule. your puppy will have accidents till she can hold it a little longer, but good luck
dont listen to people say that they shouldnt have given you a puppy, i am single and work full time and i got my puppy when she was 8 weeks old and now she is 6 months and she is fine alone in her crate while i am at work. try to get a good toy for her i got my pooch the "everlasting treat ball" and it keeps her entertained for hours while i am gone

Puppies cannot go for much more than 45 minutes without going outside to use the restroom. It's really not a surprise that she's messing her crate if she's stuck in there for over eight hours.
You need to have someone come to your house every day, every 45 minutes or so to take her outside. Crate training only works when the dog can be taken out often enough to not mess in her crate. Your current method will get her used to messing in her crate and will be very hard to correct that if you don't fix it soon.
You can try to put her in a doggy day care, like someone else suggested, but I believe that most doggy day cares do not accept puppies. I could be wrong about that though, I've never used one.
You also have the option of leaving her outside while you are gone, provided she has her vaccines and a fenced yard, but I would not recommend it for a puppy anyway.
Edit: I'm glad you're not leaving her outside. :)
7 hours in a crate is for a full-grown dog. Puppy bladders are simply not developed enough to hold it that long. They need to go outside very often. Since your dog is 13 weeks, she probably needs to go out every hour and a half, maybe even more often.

A puppy 13 weeks old can only hold its functions about 3 hours and they need to go. Make them a safe room, like a small bath room, put paper or pads down on most of the floor except where you can put them some food and water. Dogs are naturally clean animals but if left to lie in poop and pee it is very hard ot break. Helpful resource is a book called " Potty training is possable" cost about 5 dollars and is found at Petsmart. Good luck and have fun with your new friend.

I think you need to find someone who you can trust to come daily to let the puppy out. It may not be a great thing to have a puppy if you are gone for this long a period every day. This usally ends up in dogs living outside or in bad situations. maybe you should try to find the puppy a new home before you are even more attached. If you wont do that then you definetly need to find someone to sub during the day for your letting him out. maybe even twice during this long a period of time. No puppy will last 8 hours without going potty, and with this you will not be able to potty train him.

Claymore is right. The person who you got her from never should have allowed you to have her. It's not fair to leave a dog home alone 6 hours 5 days a week - it's irresponsible. A crate is a training and safety tool, not a babysitter to take the place of proper care. Your parents are going to have to either put the dog in doggie day care or hire a pet walker to come in and take the dog out during the day. They allowed you to have the dog, so they should be responsible for caring for it properly.
Edit: So, if books told you to jump of a bridge, would you? The fact of the matter is that something is wrong with your dog. The obvious solution is that you aren't taking proper care of it. Like it or not, it's a fact. Get over being so defensive and instead work on fixing it. Denial won't fix anything and eventually you'll have a horribly sad neglected puppy to deal with. I gave you two tips - hire a pet sitter/walker or put the pup in doggie day care. I'll add one more, give the dog back to the breeder or give it to breed rescue. Rescue will make sure it gets to a home with someone who will take care of it all day every day, not just a few hours after school.

Congrats on your new puppy! That's so exciting. First, don't give her food in her crate. Also, make sure she goes to the bathroom outside every 8 hours minimum. There is plenty of time for her to hold it while she's in her crate, however if she's a puppy this will take a while to learn. You have to house break her and talk with your parents about taking her to training together. Also, make sure she goes potty right before you put her in and immediately after you let her out. Also, make sure you do your daily walks for a mile or so. This is how your puppy bonds with you and gets rid of their anxiety and stress, which going potty in the crate is a sign of.
You'll be fine. Good luck and congrats again!

i know your situation. i got a bichon frise puppy last year during the summer. i would recomend that you have a parent work at home for about a week or two. someone needs to be around to let the dog out every 30 minutes or so. when the person takes the dog out to do their buissness set them on the grass. when the are done give them praise and a treat. eventually the dog will figure it out. potty outside=treat and praise. puppys have very little control of their bladder at this age so it is very hard for them to hold it that long.

You cannot expect a young puppy to stay alone for over six hours! And you cannot train them to do any thing if you are not there. Sorry to say but the breeder ought never to have let you have the pup. It is cruel.
