There are a number of preachers that want to make this too easy. They are not wanting to study the scriptures and find everything on a topic that they preach on. They are becoming more and more lazy. Satan has been affecting these people in the wrong way. GOD does not want us to quite studying and obeying HIS WORD! The BIBLE has several things that we are told to do. Christ died so that we would have an opportunity to be in heaven. When we are baptized we are cleansed of all sins.
To become a real Christian, we are told that we must HEAR the WORD in John 6:45, Jesus said, “It is written in the prophets, And they shall all be taught by God. Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me.” We are also told so in Romans 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. We are told the we must BELIEVE in Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. We are also told so in Mark 16:16, Jesus said “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” and in John 5:24 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. We are told that we must REPENT (or turn from sin) in Luke 13:3 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. Also in Acts 17:30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent. We are told to CONFESS CHRIST in Romans 10:9-10 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. We are also told in 1 Timothy 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. We are to be BAPTIZED according to Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” and Mark 16:16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. We are to CONTINUE to be FAITHFUL UNTIL DEATH according to Revelation 2:10c Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. We also know that Paul wrote in Romans 14:12 each of us shall give account of himself to God. It is important that we not ignore what is written, change what is written, or add to what is written in the New Testament which is our Christian Guide. Have a great day!

EDIT... Gary is only telling PART of the story. He has left a part of it out also. We can not take one verse or two from the BIBLE and say that is all that was said on any topic. This is what Gary has done here. Does that make sense?? I hope so.

Accepting Jesus is not as easy as one might think. The prayer MUST come from the heart and not repeated words. In order to receive salvation one must surrender control of their life to the will of God and releasing that control is very difficult. Salvation is a process that goes along with the sinners prayer and it is not a one time act. By acknowledging Jesus as Lord and Savior one is saved and begins the process of becoming the person God intended them to be.

Salvation is not about praying a pray. Salvation is based on what you believe. If you have believed and trusted in the fact that the Lord Jesus Christ died for your sins and that He was buried and took your sins away and He rose again the third day for your justification then you are going to heaven. 1 Corinthians 15: 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 1 Corinthians 15: 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: Romans 4: 25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. Preacher get the idea that you need to pray and ask God to forgive you from Romans 10: 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. What they don't realize is the fact that you are saved when you believe in your heart that the Lord Jesus Christ was raise from the dead for all that would believe. Romans 10: 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

A deep sorrow for sin, a deep repentance is what is needed.
I agree with you, too many people repeat the sinners prayer like a parrot, and often no change is wrought in the heart of that person.
You have to feel the weight of guilt and shame, before you can give it to the Lord Jesus!

juceorbe, imagine yourself on your death bed. Would you rather feel at peace with yourself for having been a good person, doing good deeds, not harming others, or because you know all your prayers and you say them all the time?
Salvation is within your hands. Prayers are an aid, a way to strenghten and support your efforts of becoming the best person you can be. In the end, prayers do not erase the guilt of doing something reprobable. Prayers help heal, support, develop, but they are not "salvation means" themselves.
:) Hope this helps.

Preachers do not preach like they did in the old days. Most have to look for things that they have not done in the Bible before they can preach it.
There is more to salvation that just praying

The Right to Enter Paradise
Death is inevitable. The thief on the cross knew when his would occur, but we can not predict our own. After his death, the crucified criminal went to live in paradise with Jesus. Some of us will also live eternally in God's presence. But others will experience everlasting torment, forever separated from Him.
If we receive Jesus as our Savior, our penalty for sin is paid. We are adopted into God's family, and Heaven is our eternal home. If we reject Jesus, we remain alienated from the Lord and under condemnation for our sin. We are destined to experience eternal judgment. God won't accept any of man's excuses because there is no acceptable defense for unbelief. (Acts 4:12)
