I recommend checking out the links below and setting up a personalized budget if you have not already. In my experience, the power of a budget is that you are no longer guessing about your money. That can be powerful. Suze Orman may not be a Christian but she has some great tools available for free on her website that may also be of help. Best wishes!

I do not have the verses available, however, I do have the jist of it. Proverbs 6:1-5.

As Christians we are under the covenant of grace and not the law. In the Old Testament 10% was the tithe and the rest belonged to you. There was a curse attached to disobedience. Under the new covenant we are exempt from the curse and able to still reap the promise and reward of obedience. In the New Testament all of our belongings, including money belong to God. Today everything we have we are a steward of not the owner of. If Jesus is truly the Lord of all of your life this is your truth. This means that we lay it all before God and ask Him what we give, to others and ourselves from His provision and blessing in our life. If you have debt make a plan to decrease and eliminate it completely. This is a totally foriegn idea to the world and considered unacceptable. However, if you are in debt to anyone you serve them until that debt is payed. God says that we cannot serve two masters. This is God's opinion, not mine.

Many Christians today do not accept this wisdom for our life and are caught up in the current world-view rather than seeing the world and those in it, including themselves from God's perspective and point of view. I do not say this is an easy position or stand to make and have not gotten there yet myself. My family and I are moving in that direction and striving to eliminate our current debt. The lifestyle that we are living today has been adjusted to stay within our current means and the current provision that God, as our provider, is giving us.

The challenges and testimonies we have because of our choice to stand on and stand up for what we believe to be truth claims from God that are written in the bible has transformed our belief into faith. I encourage you to continue to seek out the truths of God that are written in the Holy Bible and apply them to your daily life. It is when we have knowledge with understanding of the truth claims of God, what we believe, that our faith becomes stronger. When you believe the God you believe in and stand on what you really believe to be true in your mind through the choices that you make is when our belief becomes faith. When we do this we are more able to experience the true awesomeness of our God and Creator.

I agree with the above answers. My pastor always tells us do not live beyond our means. It's kind of hard though when you have an unbelieving husband! He is the spender and I'm the saver!
