It had thorns on the vine, and something that looks like a cherry at the end of it, with leaves coming off of it. It was the only one alive in the bunch, all of the others were dead. anyone know what this is?

Sounds like a rose to me- or something in the rose family (which is actually quite large). Look up a rose hip and see if that is close to what you saw.

There are a lot of clambering roses that have red hips (the fruit, often round with the 5 sepals remaining at the tip) that lose their leaves in the winter. Here's a typical-looking one (link).

It could be rosa rugosa (wrinkled rose). The cherry would be called "rose hips". Was this in the fall?
