If you are just looking for a "black belt" program, some schools offer a one year program. If you really want to know martial arts, I haven't seen a worthwhile school that will give you one in less than 3 years. But it depends on your dedication. A McDojo will get you your belt fast, but as a guy in a tournament in my area learned, it will also give others a free pass to hand your *** to you. By a newer green belt no less. Take your time, study the art, and enjoy all that martial arts has to offer.

Like others said, it depends on the school, the teacher, your ability, your commitment, your age, the syllabus, etc
Generally, it takes between 2 - 4 years. If it is over that, than you are conintually practising the same thing, again, and again, and again and not learning anything new.
Black Belt (Shodan in Karate terms) is only the beginning of what you are learning. When in doubt about your instructor, ask how long they have been training. If it is under 10 years, look for a new instructor.

It depends on several factors. First on the style itself. Some branches of karate take less time by their very nature. The next factor is the amount of time and effort a person is willing to put into their trining. 6 years is a good average time for a first degree black belt. Anything less means that something has been overlooked or that the style itself had less to learn within it.

Do not be so occupied with the destination, as with the journey traveled to arrive at the destination.
Different MA's and different dojos have different testing/achievement standards for belt promotions.
My 10-year old neice is a black belt in Tae Kwan Do, but can she beat an orange belt 25 year old man in the same art? Technically, she makes beautiful moves, but the man can beat her by using brute strength.

A lot of variables there, kiddo.
Some dojos promote their students too quickly. Parents like to see their kids excell. If they pass out belts like candy, the dojo may get more students. The kids, however, will suffer from a less than complete education in martial arts.
A black belt will usually take a year + to really earn. It depends on your commitment level, amount of training, amount of work, amount of practice, etc. There is no easy way to get one.

It depends on you but you can do it in 2 to 3 yrs, maybe less if you work hard at it.
I got my first Black belt at 12yrs old and it took me two years. For my Black belt in Hapkido it took me three years. For Jujitsu 8 yrs.
