All I know is that it has something to do with "Hermes," or some ancient God.

Hermes is the Olympian god of boundaries and of the travelers who cross them, of shepherds and cowherds, of orators and wit, of literature and poets, of athletics, of weights and measures and invention and commerce in general, and of the cunning of thieves and liars.

He is also the messenger from the gods to humans (translator).

A separate religion? I don't believe so, just a portion of Greek Mythology.

It is part of Alchemy. Not necessary a separate religion, since Alchemy has been practice in all places and all religions. I am a student of Christian Alchemy.

The occult group called the Golden Dawn followed Hermetic philosophy, as do modern day Rosicrucians . And it was also part of Egyptian religion, so this is the ancient religion that you are asking about.
