Because walking the hallway down to the electric chair felt like walking a mile -- typically called the Last Mile..But in Stephen King's book the floor was painted a sickly green. So they called it the Green Mile. Excellent book, and exceptional movie - it followed the book at least 97%.

It is explain int eh movie, at the begging and I think even now, the floor was green color! :)
