Have you ever been on Craigslist? I have found so many things used and usually in really good condition from there. Otherwise I would try ebay or if you have a children's consignment shop in your area. These things seem so important now but really the only thing your baby will need is a few swaddling blankets, sleep and play jumpers and the boob. The matching comforter (you can't use) and bumper that needs to be taken out of the crib when your baby starts to stand are pretty but useless! If you insist on getting them buy them second hand and save for things he'll really need! Good Luck!

you're off to a great start with those items. I'd pick a nice blanket, and use the colors from that to pick out inexpensive sheets and curtains. just make sure that the fabrics are comfy and washable.
My mom made room sets for my siblings back in the 70's by stenciling disney characters onto cheap white sheets and then used a projector to enlarge the design onto the wall.
you could buy fabric and sew your own set if you've got that talent, or keep your eyes open while checking out thrift stores, yard sales, or ebay.
also keep in mind that a cutesy theme will grow old after a while, but ifyou stick to mostly neutrals you can always redecorate easier again next time. Look for blankets that are bigger than the standard infant swaddling blankets that will last a few years. Think about investing in "grow with me" furniture that willsave you money later (i've seen baby swings that convert into toddler chairs, high chairs that convert into toddler boosters, infant tubs that expand to accomodate growing babies).
The best piece of furniture i've found is a good, comfortable rocking chair. it inevitably becomes the focal point of the room forthe child, as it transtions from snuggled infant breast or bottle-feeding spot, to rocking the sleepy toddler off place, to cozy story time spot.

I thought the crib changing table was a waste of money and space. i used it for storage. i used to change my son either on the floor or sofa with a blanket underneath.
i never had a rocking chair but i know i would of loved it because i used my living room recliner which rocked.
the dresser is definitely a good investment. don't forget toiletries.
another thing thats good to have is a rocking bouncer so that if u need to put her down but not in his room u can.
a bassinet because when he is born u will be getting up several times a night and its easier when he is in the same room.

This isn't really answering your question regarding the theme, but the absolute best advice I could give to you would be not to skimp on the rocking chair because you will be spending a lot of quality time in it....my wife and I spent hours each day with our newborn just rocking him, it's truely a wonderful experience....he's 17 month's now and we still use the rocking chair every night to read him a book before bed...so in retrospect, I wished we had spent a little more money for a higher quality chair.

I could not have done without a baby swing! As far as decorating ideas do you have any art skills? If not dont worry as there are alot of things that can been done very inexpensively. Go to your local dollar store to find all kind of removable stick ons. I have used these with my young school age kids. When your baby gets older and decides his or her own interests these are easy to remove from bookcases and such. A few different colors of paint ( even "scraps" from a local construction company or friend that has remodled recently) can go a long way to set a theme. Congrats on your comming arrival and good luck!

A Diaper Genie, a clothes hamper, ant you're set. The rocker is okay, but I almost NEVER fed my baby in the nursery... If you already have a La-Z-Boy recliner, that is much more comfortable than a regular rocking or gliding chair. As for the book case, that can wait for at least a year. Most baby books will be more "comfy" in a cheap willow basket, along with the toys.

For themed nurseries:
babies r us
Ikea
A bookcase is a must, a rocking chair is nice, but not all babies like to be rocked.
I went to Walmart and bought some foam stamps and blue paint and put blue stars on the walls (my daughter has pink hearts on her wall). We also bought chalkboard paint and painted a 2 ft by 2 ft chalkboard on one wall, though its probably a bit too soon for that for you.
We didn't need a baby monitor, because we have a small house, but if you get one I'd suggest one with multiple recievers so you don't always have to lug it from room to room with you.
I liked my diaper genie until my son started solids, then it didn't do enough to cover the odors and we just started taking them outside.

I always would go to the resale shop to see what I can get for a cheaper price. I also got help from family and friends.
