Yes and Yes. I try not to associate with those people, but it is hard if you live with them.

if you are doing things to get better, like taking meds, getting counseling, exercising, getting out with friends, etc, i can't see how someone would think it is your fault (and sometimes people get so depressed that they can't do the above, actually)
I think there are still a lot of people who think you should just get over it, and what the deal there is that they feel sad sometimes and they think that's what depression is, but it is more than that. There's the stigma of mental illness going on here. And remember, no one can see that anything is wrong with you, because you have a mental illness, you can pass for "normal" whereas someone in a wheelchair can't, so it's easy for people to say there is nothing wrong with you b/c they can't see you struggling to do things. If you get a thick skin about it, you can educate people about it so they don't put down others with depression. This problem is getting less and less over time, so you won't have this problem forever.

If people accuse you for being the cause of your own depression , then (on a serious note) your probably a person who makes big fuses and craves attention, telling people things to make them feel sorry for you. People may think of you as a cry baby or attention craver. You may want to release those tendencies and find other ways to draw postive attention to yourself. I had a friend like that, who always told me "Heather im depressed" and I get tired of hearing her say that all the time because I knew she didnt have a ligit reason to be, she just liked the attention!

Find a great relaxation program, you will feel much better about yourself, and what you think others may be thinking of you.
Take care and best of luck

Only if they are insensitive jerks. Ignore them is the best I can offer you. Depression is *NOT* a joking matter and no one should EVER tell you that it's your fault.
