The most abundant gas typically released into the atmosphere from volcanic systems is water vapor (H2O), followed by CO2 (carbon dioxide), and SO2 (sulfur dioxide).

The best estimates of the total amount of carbon (i.e., CO2) released from volcanoes worldwide is about 0.035 x 10^15 gC/yr. Human activities release more than 150 times the amount of CO2 emitted by volcanoes. The most recent figure I could find was from 2000, and shows that humans put a total of about 6.5 billion metric tons of CO2 into the atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels.

The ratio of the amount of CO2 given off by humans compared to that given off by volcanos is unimportant - volcanos have always released CO2 gas into the atmosphere, while the release of CO2 by humans is a brand new phenomena.

Current estimates show that humans contribute more CO2 emissions on average than volcanic sources by a ratio greater than 10 to one. Individual volcanic events can prove more catastrophic. The lake Nylos incident with a sudden release of subterranean gases actually killed thousands in the vicinity...65million years ago when India was colliding with the rest of Asia a supervolcanic event was triggered at the Deccan steppes which probably created a global catastrophe, coincident with several large meteoric impacts, extinguishing most of the larger major lifeforms..

Pumps aren't really that noxious, smelly and sometimes followed by a small bit off poo.. An intrusion on your nostrils yes, but compared to a volcano they don't stand a chance..
Volcano wins hands down..

The Volcanoes are good Co2, due to there being absorbed. The `Bad` emissions are the C.F.Cs which are generated by man. Be warned, we`re on the brink.
