Paying off debt you owe is always good.

Nicholesdad got it right - go to the credit bureau. The phone number is usually on the last page of your report. If not, get it from the reporting bureau.

Be careful about paying a bill that is beyond the "debt statute of limitations" for your state. You could do more harm than good by paying and reaging the account. The debt will fall off in 7 years, paid or not and is essentially uncollectable after the statute expires. Paying a collection account starts that 7 year clock over again. Your credit score takes into account how "old" the bad information is.

The decision about whether to contact the creditor or not should take this into account as well as your reason for paying the account. If it is to clean up your report to obtain additional credit in the near future, a paid in full account may be required. If it is to get credit beyond the 7 year mark, then if may be better to leave it alone.

Write to all of the bureaus and here is a sample letter

You need to call the credit report agency and ask them to decode the subscriber code of that lender. They have to, by law, give you their complete name, address and phone number.
